Ché Fu, son of Polynesian Panther Tigi Ness waiata Waka leads into a mini-doco on the Dawn Raids.

Introduction

A little known fact, two thirds of overstayers in Aotearoa/New Zealand in the 70s - 80s were European, hailing from Europe and North America but they weren't targeted to the extent like Pasifika people, who instead made up two thirds of those prosecuted. In 1976, New Zealand police and immigration officials stormed the homes, workplaces, and even churches of Pasifika people, searching for those who had overstayed their visas. Schools that Pasifika young people attended were also targeted. The practice followed a boom period where migration from the Islands of Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa was encouraged to fill labour shortages. But when the economy declined, the Pasifika community was demonised by politicians and media.

He aha/What: This important mini-doco looks at the relationship of Aotearoa and its whanaunga from the Islands of Te Moana-Nui-A-Kiwa population, and how this has evolved over the decades. "this short-form doco, has encapsulated the history of the Dawn Raids era, historians, Pacific families, teachers and a policeman help to paint a picture of a time that redefined the lives of Pacific people in Aotearoa".
