Takatāpui, Part of the Whānau, written by Dr Elizabeth Kerekere with Tīwhanawhana Trust and the Mental Health Foundation.

Takatāpui is a traditional term meaning ‘intimate companion of the same sex.’ It has been reclaimed to embrace all Māori who identify with diverse genders, sexualities and sex characteristics such as whakawāhine, tangata ira tāne, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, non-binary and queer. All of these and more are included within Rainbow communities. Many takatāpui enjoy the love and support of their whānau. Some whānau struggle. This can result in takatāpui being disconnected not only from their whānau, hapū and iwi but also from their Māori culture. Joyful movement project.

Link to the Joyful Movement projects report. The Joyful Movement kaupapa is focused on creating opportunities for more Rainbow young people in Tāmaki Makaurau to participate in movement and fitness opportunities that bring them joy. Joyful movement is an approach to fitness and exercise that centres finding pleasure and enjoyment in the way we move our bodies. This project involved young people as community researchers running a listening campaign to hear the thoughts, ideas, experiences, and feelings of our Rainbow community members, and work collaboratively to turn these into action for our communities. Huge acknowledgement to Rhion Munro and Danny Kittner from Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau for this mahi work.
