Introduction
This section starts with a waiata apt for our kaupapa and the mahi ahead. Ka Mānu, composed by Rob Ruha saw musicians band together to record a song in support of the Ihumātao land protectors it speaks of unity and peaceful resistance. “We as musicians came together to record a song to help support this issue that has suppressed our Māori people and essentially Indigenous people right across the globe". This kōwae ako (module) has been designed to be thought-provoking, open hearts and minds, to question to reaffirm, to learn, to unlearn. For some this journey will be new and for others this journey is a continuation of many millenia of learning manifesting in the shared hitori/history, pūrākau/stories and mātauranga/knowledge from their Tūpuna. We acknowledge this spectrum, to all. Kia Kaha, Kia Māia, Kia Manawanui.
For some this will be a catalyst to engage in the important kanohi ki te kanohi/face to face He Wakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, Te Tiriti o Waitangi mahi/work, as your contribution to this is vital. For others it will reaffirmation of their life's mahi. It is hoped that this kōwae ako content will tautoko you on your journey.
We will start with sharing the voice of Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu Kuia and Kaumātua with Ngāpuhi Speaks, Wai 1040 claimants, followed by the voice of claimants involved in the Wai 262 claim. All Hapū pūrākau and mātauranga are of absolute importance as are the many Wai claims, they bear intergenerational trauma experienced through colonisation but they also are a vessel of intergenerational pūrākau/stories and mātauranga.
For the purpose of this kaupapa we have focused on Wai 1040 as this provides historical accounts from Kuia and Kaumātua that give context to Te Mātua - He Wakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni and Te Tamaiti - Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Along with the Wai 262 claim, a significant, complex claim that resulted in the first whole-of-government report, addressing the work of more than 20 Government departments and agencies.
The other two kōwae ako that build on this conversation is the racism, anti-racism and lastly, realising indigenisation and imagining decolonisation.
